![]() | 90-degree fork trucks A high degree of lateral back bending and discomfort is associated with the use of standard fork trucks, which can require the operator to lean to either side of the mast to see the forks. A 90-degree fork truck provides the operator with a clear, unobstructed view of the forks. |
![]() | Accelerometer Use an accelerometer to measure vibration. For whole-body vibration, a tri-axial accelerometer is optimal. For segmental vibration, use the vibration value of the tool. Proper and consistent alignment of the accelerometer is essential for accurate vibration measurements. Compare measurements to the appropriate criteria (Design and Build Guidelines, ACGIH, etc.). |
![]() | Accessories for overhead fluorescent lighting Use full spectrum lighting instead of traditional lighting because it is brighter, lasts longer, and can be less fatiguing to the eyes. Electric supply stores usually carry full spectrum lighting and can help you select the correct type to use within a specific working environment. Covering lights with parabolic louver covers can also be beneficial. The covers fit over standard lighting fixtures and are designed to reduce glare. However, due to the complex manufacturing process, they can be expensive. The louver shown here is manufactured by PLLA. As an alternative, light conditioners are designed to recreate the eye comfort of full spectrum lighting. They are ideally suited for offices with glare from overhead fixtures or from large, tinted windows. The light conditioners are cylindrical sleeves that slip over the existing fluorescent tubes. They filter the blue-green effect, adding color in to recreate the most comfortable light spectrum. The light conditioners shown here are available through Office Organix. |
![]() | Acoustic ceiling tiles Acoustic ceiling tiles control sound reverberation within a variety of settings, and eliminate unwanted and distracting noises and sounds. The ceiling tiles shown here are manufactured by Netwell Noise Control. |
![]() | Add-on corners Create a corner work surface with an add-on corner, a piece of metal or plastic that fits over the intersection of two work surfaces that form an L shape. The computer monitor can be placed in the wasted space created by the corner, and the keyboard support can be mounted to the add-on corner, directly in line with the computer monitor. This configuration allows the keyboard to be placed as close to the edge of the desk as possible, thereby reducing excessive elbow extension. It is especially effective in conjunction with adjustable armrests to support the forearms. The add-on corner shown here is available through Ergosource. |
![]() | Add-on height adjustable legs Add-on height adjustable legs can convert stationary work surfaces into adjustable work surfaces. They should have a 10" range of adjustability, and enable operators to work 32" to 42" above the standing surface. The adjustable leg shown here is available through Ergosource. |
![]() | Adjustable and non-adjustable carts Height adjustable carts combine adjustable-height capability with portability, eliminating awkward body postures associated with lifting and carrying items. Height adjustable carts enable operators to load and unload materials at different heights. The recommended manual material handling height is 21" to 48". Many clean room carts are custom built to suit the environment. The clean room cart shown here is available from Terra Universal. |
![]() | Adjustable and non-adjustable tables A height and angle adjustable work surface reduces raised shoulders and non-neutral hand/wrist postures. A height adjustable table or platform enables the opreator to mechanically adjust the working height to a comfortable, suitable level for the task being performed. Choose an adjustable workstation with height adjustability of at least 10"; an electric, pneumatic, or hand-crank adjustment (choose electric or pneumatic if the loads will be greater than 500 lb); rounded work surface edges; and one that can be mounted with attachments such as footrests, shelves, and drawers. For clean room compatibility, adjustable and non-adjustable tables should be made from electropolished stainless steel. The clean room table shown here is available from Bandy Incorporated. |
![]() | Adjustable height worktables An adjustable height worktable enables the operator to mechanically adjust the working height. This adjustability is necessary to provide a comfortable working height for operators of varying sizes. Electric, pneumatic, or hand-crank adjustment tables are available, although electric or pneumatic controls are recommended when the tabletop holds more than 500 lb. Tables should have rounded corners, and operators should be able to mount attachments such as footrests, shelves, drawers, tool trolleys, and fans. Tables should also have at least 10" of height adjustability, ranging from 32" to 42" for standing workstations. The adjustable height worktable shown here is manufactured by Arlink. |
