The "Human Side" of Humantech

"At Humantech, we take great pride in our work, but we take even greater pride in our people. This page is to share with you the human side of Humantech. It is our way of letting you see us as people and as friends, as parents and as impassioned individuals with rich and full lives. It is also a glimpse into our 'heart.'"

Humantech Consultant Shares Her “Big Sister” Experience

By Susan Shaw

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is an organization that pairs adults with kids with similar interests that are in need of role models or just some extra attention. As a Big Sister, I can give my little sister an opportunity do something outside of her everyday world. For me, it started as just a few hours a month and turned into a lifelong friendship.

I’ve been part of BBBS for over 6 years and with this particular little sister for about 4.5 years. We have done everything from playing board games, making dinner, reading a book, doing homework, going to the zoo, and most recently, to both being bridesmaids in her mother’s wedding!

A few years ago, we were selected to be in some advertisements for the United Way. What we thought was going to be a quote or two turned into a video shown at all United Way events, a billboard on one of the busiest streets in town, posters, fliers, and even a short snip-it at the movie theater during trailers.

When I moved from Kalamazoo to Ann Arbor I wasn’t ready to leave my little sister and her family. We now talk on the phone every other week (more if she needs advice or someone to talk to) and I see her about once every other month. I truly enjoy being a part of BBBS—I’ve got someone that keeps me young and having fun!

Ergonomics in the Classroom

Humantech's Newest Employees

Earlier this year, Kent Hatcher, a managing consultant at Humantech, worked with team leaders at Westwood New Tech High School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, to integrate ergonomics into a project-based curriculum on human anatomy.  For the muscle unit, he worked with the program’s science facilitator to develop legitimate reasons students would need to know muscle names and structure through the work he and other ergonomists do at Humantech.

Specifically, Kent provided information on topics such as how muscle groups fit into ergonomic design, the types of product testing for ergonomics, and the training needed to work in that profession.
